VERTIGO & VESTIBULAR REHABILITATION

2/2/2019

Vertigo is a condition treated at Healthview with the help of vestibular goggles.
Determining the correct system of vertigo treatment could be challenging. In part, this is due to the simple fact that its symptoms and triggers change in their seriousness and visibility. Knowing the proper angle from which to attack the issues of dizziness, nausea, and disorientation which are associated with vertigo entails taking time to accurately pinpoint its origin and see what other complications are associated with it.
The very best way to learn about vertigo treatment is by consulting an expert. Frequently, the signs of vertigo are disregarded or self treated for far too long and therapy becomes a difficult take. By recognising symptoms a targeted history and vestibular exam can quickly pinpoint the problem.
"Vertigo: is a symptom where a person feels as if they or the objects around them are moving when they are not"

Changing the Game with the AlterG

1/9/2017

Picture
The staff at Healthview are excited to announce the addition of a very specialized piece of exercise/rehab equipment. The Alter G is a game changer in Rehabilition and Fitness. The technology was first developed for NASA that was later re-worked from creating gravity effects to overcoming them.

Our interdisciplinary setting is well suited to incorporate the Alter G. In fact, when costs drop we foresee this as a standard component of base equipment rather than a luxury in many centres like ours.

We will be using the Alter G for rehabilition and fitness, and work the costs into our therapy sessions. In addition, we will make available packages of sessions for those who are post treatment who want to continue on the AlterG, as well as for those who want to use the machine for general fitness and/or weight loss.

The Alter G can be used for so many conditions as well as complement fitness programs. We recomend you visit healthview.ca and/or our altergwpg.ca site for more information.

The Core Basics

5/25/2016

Core Exercises are fundamental basics for most of our patients who have diagnosed spinal complaints.  Targeted exercises can improve strength, stability and help prevent or decrease frequency of symptoms of certain types of spinal conditions.

Core strength exercises strengthen your core muscles, including your abdominal muscles, back muscles and the muscles around the pelvis. Strong core muscles make it easier to do many physical activities.

You can do core strength exercises on a carpeted floor or mat. Breathe freely and deeply during each core strength exercise. Focus on tightening your transversus abdominis, the deepest abdominal muscle and the one you feel contracting when you cough.

All exercises should be pain free.  If you have undiagnosed back pain or are unsure if you're ready see one of our professionals. Our clinicians can determine functional weaknesses and design a program specific to your needs.

New Shockwave Peri-Actor Heads

4/26/2016

We have added four new myofascial transmitters to our Shockwave therapy treatments. Peri-Actor fascial heads can penetrate deep into tissues not reached by traditional methods.

Fascia can be viewed as a sack throughout the body that encapsulates and compartmentalizes tissue such as muscle. Recent theory focuses the important role of mobility, function and pain and consequently imbalances within the myofascial tissues.

What is Fascial tissue? If you look at a piece of meat and see that thin fibrous translucent fibrous surrounding tissue - that's fascia.

Myofascial treatments are often typically done by hand or with instrument assisted hand tools. These methods are known to be beneficial but may not reach the depth or have the effectiveness of mechanical tools such as Shockwave.

Practitioners at Healthview often combine contemporary fascial protocols with Shockwave head combinations. Shockwave treatment is a popular choice as an adjunctive modality with our clinicians.

If you have questions contact us or ask one of our providers for information.

Spring Fitness Challenge

Several exercises to get you started this spring. Naturally be careful and gradual if you have been sedentary for the last little while.  Don't feel you need to follow the program exactly.

This is a gradual increase so for most the increase will be manageable.  For those who have been active you can add this to your current program.

If you have concerns ask one of our professionals for a modified program or join one of our classes. Finally, uncertainty about current health status should be addressed first. Try the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire below and or see a qualified professional.

RockTape As An Adjunctive Therapy

8/18/2015

Our Doctors and Therapists often use adjunctive therapy options in a more comprehensive treatment approach. Other therapy options may include:
  • taping (elastic therapeutic tape)
  • instrument assisted soft tissue work
  • myofascial therapy
  • joint mobilization/manipulation
  • exercise/stretching
  • home program
  • ergonomic assessment
Rocktape is one of those add-ons sometimes used as part of a complete treatment. Below are a couple of examples of how we might use Rocktape as part of your treatment.

How Does Rock Tape help?:

Shockwave V-Actor added to our Shockwave Machine

8/10/2015

PictureEffective physiological muscle vibration therapy
Two weeks ago we added a V-actor head to our already popular shockwave machine. Our standard head is called the D-actor and both tools can be used as a stand-alone treatment or together. In addition, these tools are often used as an adjunct in a general treatment plan. Patients have been giving us extremely positive feedback since our shockwave machine arrived 7 months ago. We have done hundreds of treatments and applied over 2 million pulses to date. If you have shoulder, elbow and/or foot pain, try shockwave.

Rehabilitation with an Anti-Gravity Treadmill

7/8/2015

Picture
I recently read a piece on the AlterG and was impressed with the technology and excited about the possibilities of this treadmill system. Initially I knew little about this particular advanced rehabilitation option. As a healthcare and technology geek new equipment is exciting and as I learned more, I found myself suddenly wanting an AlterG treadmill.

This unit as it is today does has a few challenges in certain markets and clinic types primarily due to its cost. On the other hand I personally see great potential with increased rehabilitation options for patients. Furthermore I know other healthcare geeks (Healthview staff) who would be as excited as myself to see one of these treadmills arrive at our door.

This NASA technology was originally designed to recreate the effects of gravity for astronauts in space.

Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave Update

We have had our  Shockwave Therapy Ultra mp100 for over two months now and the practitioners have done over 100 treatments. As with most therapies we are skeptical until we have all had the opportunity to use the tool and compare notes. The general consensus among the staff is positive and it has replaced the therapeutic ultrasound machine as a modality of choice for certain conditions.

The patients have responded well to Shockwave treatment and the feedback has been amazing. The tool has surpassed staff and patient expectations. For most the protocol consists of 3 treatments one week apart. In our experience most patients are asymptomatic by this time or show significant improvement. It's important to note that if the patient has had only minor or no improvement by this point, the patient should be reassessed and treatment options discussed.

Shockwave has been a fantastic new tool and has helped us improve our outcomes with some generally challenging conditions. We have treated some of the common problems and used the tool as an adjunctive option for some less common problems to improve recovery times. On the right I listed some common issues we have used Shockwave Therapy for. It is best to contact Healthview for information and/or talk with one of our professionals to see if Shockwave is for you.

Therapy has proven useful for:
  • Plantar Fasciiitis
  • Bursitis
  • Achilles Tendinitis
  • Patella Tendinitis
  • Calcific Tendinitis
